Pre-Procedure Assessment
– Hormone testing, including FSH, LH, and estradiol levels, to evaluate ovarian function and determine the best timing for treatment.
– Ultrasound imaging to assess the health of the uterus and ovaries and identify any abnormalities such as fibroids or cysts.
– Infectious disease screening for both partners to ensure a safe treatment environment, including tests for HIV, hepatitis B/C, and syphilis.
– Semen analysis to evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology, ensuring the sample is suitable for IUI.
Preparation
Fertility medications such as clomiphene or gonadotropins may be prescribed to stimulate egg production and enhance ovulation.
Sperm collection is followed by a “washing” process to remove impurities and concentrate the healthiest sperm for insemination.
IUI Procedure
Performed in a clinic setting, the prepared sperm is inserted through a thin, flexible catheter directly into the uterus during the woman’s ovulation window.
The procedure is quick, typically painless, and requires no anesthesia. Patients may experience mild cramping similar to a Pap smear.
Post-Procedure
Patients are advised to rest briefly after the procedure and resume normal activities shortly thereafter. A follow-up appointment is scheduled approximately two weeks later to confirm pregnancy success.
