Why Do 85% of Eggs Fail to Develop into Blastocyst Embryos?

Understanding Embryo Retention Rates in IVF Treatment

Going through IVF treatment can be exciting but also overwhelming, especially when trying to understand embryo retention rates. Every individual’s journey is unique, and outcomes can vary widely.

The Reality of IVF Success

While the ultimate goal is a successful pregnancy, it’s important to set realistic expectations about embryo development. Not every egg retrieved will become a viable blastocyst, and this natural decline in numbers is known as the IVF attrition rate.

Why Do Some Eggs Fail to Develop?

The process from egg retrieval to fertilisation and embryo development involves multiple stages. Some eggs or embryos naturally stop progressing, which is completely normal in IVF cycles.

🔹 This decline is expected in every IVF cycle.
🔹 Not all retrieved eggs will fertilise or develop into blastocyst embryos.

What Are the Success Rates?

Success rates vary based on individual factors, but general IVF trends show:

✅ 80% of retrieved eggs are mature and ready for fertilisation.
✅ 80% of those mature eggs typically fertilise successfully.
✅ 30-50% of fertilised eggs reach the blastocyst stage (ready for transfer).

Example Calculation:

If 10 eggs are retrieved:

➡️ Around 8 eggs may be mature.
➡️ About 6 eggs may fertilise.
➡️ 1-3 embryos may develop into blastocysts for transfer.

This means around 80-85% of eggs will not develop into blastocysts, which is completely normal.

Why Do Some Eggs and Embryos Stop Developing?

Several factors contribute to failed embryo development, including:

🔹 Egg Quality – As women age, egg quality naturally declines. Certain medical conditions can also affect egg health.
🔹 Sperm Quality – Poor sperm health can impact fertilisation and embryo development.
🔹 Chromosomal Abnormalities – Many embryos stop developing due to genetic issues.
🔹 Laboratory Conditions – Even in the best IVF labs, not all embryos continue growing.
