Changes in Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, your body develops a natural “defense system” to protect your baby. This can result in noticeable changes in the color, consistency, and odor of your vaginal discharge.

What Are the Most Important Changes?

During pregnancy, vaginal discharge often becomes more abundant. This excessive discharge, known as leukorrhea, is typically:

  • Light yellow or almost white.
  • Watery in consistency, similar to discharge during your menstrual cycle.
  • Mild in odor.

When to Be Cautious:

If your vaginal discharge:

  • Turns yellowish or greenish.
  • Develops a strong or unpleasant odor.
  • Causes burning, itching, or redness in the vaginal area.

These symptoms could indicate an infection, and you should consult your gynecologist promptly.

Does Vaginal Discharge Change During Different Stages of Pregnancy?

Yes, the characteristics of vaginal discharge can vary depending on the stage of pregnancy:

First Trimester:

You might notice light bleeding, which can sometimes be mistaken for menstruation. This is often a sign of implantation bleeding, occurring as the baby attaches to the uterus. This is generally not a cause for concern.

Second Trimester:

Vaginal discharge may occasionally be accompanied by bleeding.

  • If you recently had sexual intercourse or a gynecological exam, this may be the cause, especially if the bleeding is brown.
  • Bright red bleeding, especially if accompanied by pain, should be assessed by a gynecologist immediately.

Third Trimester:

  • You may be tested for Streptococcus Agalactiae, a bacterium that is typically harmless but can occasionally cause postpartum infections. If you test positive, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to be administered during delivery.
  • As you near delivery, you might notice the expulsion of the mucus plug, sometimes tinged with blood, indicating that labor is approaching.
